KINGSFORD – More consistent command of the strike zone has Kingsford riding a season best three-game win streak into this afternoon’s scheduled contest against Iron Mountain.

Junior Jonah Doenier pitched the Flivvers to their latest win, a 7-2 decision over Menominee Friday afternoon at Gary Spigarelli Memorial Field.

Doenier went five and 1/3 innings before reaching his pitch limit, allowing only four hits, one earned run while striking nine against just three walks before yielding to junior Jack Spreen to close out the game.

Spreen allowed two hits and one run with three Ks and three walks and was backed up by a four-run sixth by the Flivvers for plenty of cushion.

“I thought Doenier pitched a really good game,” Flivvers head coach Joe Kriegl said. “We got a little nervous there in the seventh but was nice to see Jack finish. Those are the types of moments we need to get our guys into. Understand the situation, that we’re not necessarily looking for strikeouts. We had a good lead. It’s just about throwing strikes and letting the defense support you.”

Kingsford senior Jacob Deuter connects for a single against Menominee Friday afternoon. Deuter was 1-for-2 with a walk and two runs scored in the Flivvers’ 7-2 win.

The Maroons opened their final at-bat with two singles and walk with nobody out to add a run and threaten for more. But Spreen buckled down with a strikeout for the first out, and after one more walk, fanned the final two batters.

“It’s nice to get the win, especially in our conference,” Kriegl said. “Our conference is good. Menominee is getting way better. They’re young too. They’re going to be tough the next time we see them and for years to come.”

It was a tight game until the Flivvers opened things up in the sixth. Both teams plated a run in the second, with the Flivvers grabbing the lead in the fourth when junior Noah Trulock chopped a ball through the hole on the left side to score senior Jack Kriegl who was running from first on the pitch after initially reaching on an error.

Menominee helped the Flivvers to their big sixth inning by walking two and hitting a batter to load up the bases with nobody out. Freshman Colin Olsen then knocked a run-scoring single to left. Spreen brought in another run with a fielder’s choice, and the Maroons walked in two runs in the frame.

Kingsford’s first run scored on a swipe of home on a double steal attempt to tie the game 1-1 in the second. The Flivvers only had three hits in the game, with senior Jake Deuter adding a single to left in the second to join Trulock and Olsen in the hit column. Kingsford took nine walks and saw the Maroons make three errors.

Menominee totaled six hits, with Robert Finger drilling a home to left for the game’s first run in the top of the second. The Maroons had another threat in the sixth, loading the bases with two outs, but a hot shot to third was cleanly backhanded by Deuter from a knee, and he stepped on the bag for the final out.

Kingsford (3-9) is hosting this afternoon’s game with Iron Mountain.

In junior varsity action Friday, the Flivvers improved to 7-0-1 with a 6-4 victory in a four-inning game with Menominee. The Flivvers had just two hits, including a RBI double by freshman Ian Hensley in the second inning for the go-ahead run. Olsen had an RBI hit for the Flivvers’ first run, and freshman Gino Santoni drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, as the Flivvers erased a 3-0 hole in the bottom of the first inning.
