Few thoughts on ‘dictator for a day’

Hello again. I had just a quick thought I wanted to share and hope it makes some of you think long and hard. We have a man running for president who says that he plans to be a “dictator for a day.” Just the first day. I am not a historian but I have read a lot of history and cannot remember anyone who was a “dictator for a day.” But let me expand on that thought just a bit. If that were to happen, if there was a “dictator for a day,” YOU would no longer be self-governing. After nearly 250 years, the experiment of self-governance would be gone on that one day. You and the ...

Bergman blasts USPS for calling off public meeting late

Following the indefinite postponement by the United States Postal Service of the scheduled public input meeting for the mail processing facility review of the Iron Mountain Processing and Distribution Center in Kingsford, U.S. Rep. Jack Bergman penned this letter to USPS Postmaster General Louis DeJoy: “I write to share my deep discontent with the U.S. Postal Service’s recent decision to postpone the scheduled public input meeting on the agency’s mail processing facility review of the Iron Mountain Processing and Distribution Center, located in Kingsford, Mich. “In the weeks ...

Don’t be ashamed

If you are struggling mentally in life with depression, anxiety, etc. ... please do not be ashamed or afraid to speak about it. To be forthright, if people want to stoop so low to use your problems against you, let them lower themselves to that level. In all honesty, if people use your problems against you they have a lot more severe problem than you will ever have. I just read Elon Musk’s biography and he readily admits for 18 months he battled insanity. He would get so mentally down that he would lay on the floor in his office, and the only way his top administrator could ...

Call for public to speak out against USPS service changes

EDITOR: The United States Postal Service has made changes negatively impacting your mail service throughout the Upper Peninsula and adjoining Wisconsin communities. Your help is needed to demand that service be restored to previous levels. Prior to Jan. 8, 2024, mail from the 498-499 area zip codes was transported at the close of each business day to Kingsford’s Upper Peninsula Mail Processing Center to be processed, shipped to other facilities outside the 498-499 area (outgoing mail to Minnesota, Green Bay, Oshkosh, Lansing, Gaylord). Upper Peninsula mail (Newberry to Ironwood ...

Supreme Court has to decide

Under normal circumstances a candidate who has lost the Iowa caucus and New Hampshire primary will politely bow out of the presidential race. But not Nikki Haley. Unlike Ron DeSantis and Vivek Ramaswamy, who dropped out and endorsed Trump, Haley is still persevering in her attempt to win the Republican nomination. Some have questioned the wisdom of such actions but have failed to see the unusual and historic path Nikki Haley has to the Republican nomination and ultimately the White House. If the U.S. Supreme Court bars Mr. Trump from running for president, then the Republican party ...

DICSA seeks millage renewal

With the upcoming vote Feb. 27 to renew the Dickinson County senior millage, I am writing to inform area residents of just how much the millage dollars impact our area seniors. DICSA, the Dickinson Iron Community Services Agency, receives a good portion of the millage dollars. We use the funds to support these level of services to eligible senior residents. The numbers below are annual counts from 2023 in Dickinson County alone. — 67,945 meals delivered to 340 homebound seniors; — 26,981 meals served in a group setting; — 49 households receiving 5,260 hours of in-home care ...
