It’s time to remember

It’s October and the mid-term elections are right around the corner. It’s decision-making time and time to remember what has happened in Michigan over the past few years. Remember the promises to fix the d—- roads? Are they any better now? No, they are worse. Remember when the governor said she supports the “spirit” of “defund the police” and then a year later announced the creation of “Michigan Safe Communities” to crack down on crime. Which will it be, governor? Remember when we could go to the big box stores in the summer of 2020, but the governor ordered ...

On First District representation

Some of you may not remember when we had a representative in Congress who actually cared about Yoopers. Men from either party, once in Washington, never forgot whom they represented. Men of the caliber of Ruppe, Stupak and others who shared our concerns as they shared our unique part of the state. Whether or not one agreed with them, one never doubted that they always wanted what was best for this legislative district. Alas, no more. Now, it seems, we have a man who dreams of his Louisiana retirement home while blindly following the party line. Remember when he came to the Soo for a ...

Don’t be fooled by the words

“Oh what a tangled web we weave/When first we practice to deceive,” is a very “Shakespearean” phrase; however, it is not from Shakespeare. It comes from an early 19th century Scottish author, Sir Walter Scott. This is what is happening with Proposal 22-3 on the November ballot in Michigan. Commonly called “Reproductive Freedom For All”; who can argue against “Freedom for all”? The brief and ambiguous language is worthy of being called tangled and deceptive. Before something so serious should be enshrined into our state constitution, much better language needs to be ...

We all are the US government

I have been watching the news lately and see the “talking heads” are being sensational again but failing to remind people of simple facts. First, when they are talking about the United States government, that means us. You me, all of us. If you are a citizen, you are part of the United States government. What a thought, huh? That sure takes the wind out of your sails. If YOU are the United States government, who do you complain about when things are not as you believe they should be. I have the answer. We hire managers to run things and they have titles. Senators (you have two) and ...

A note from ‘The Tab Man’

I said in the last letter I was taking a break. Continue to save tabs but hold on to them. Please watch more closely as to what you are putting in the containers you are turning in. Many items are not aluminum. Some of the things I have come across are paper clips, pins, bottle caps, hearing aid batteries, etc. Ninety-nine percent of the large tabs you think are aluminum are other metals. Humor: One day when collecting tabs, a friend, Joe Tripp, asked me if I write these letters. I told him, “No.” My penmanship is bad, I print them. He looked at me and shook his head, drank his ...

Phone option needed for DNR deer registration in Michigan

Wildlife Conservation Order Amendment No. 4 of 2022 will now require you to report your deer harvests in Michigan. I’ve been reaching out to the Department of Natural Resources because they are forcing you to report your harvest online or with an app. Other states that I have hunted in, including Iowa and Wisconsin, provide a phone number so you are able to call in your harvest, but the Michigan DNR says that is not an option. A large number of people still do not use smartphones or have internet access. Cellular internet service is still limited in northern Michigan and the Upper ...
