KINGSFORD — In the Upper Peninsula people wake up, check the weather, and then dress accordingly. Monday began with bright sunshine, blue skies and melting snow. The Golden K members arrived at the First Presbyterian Church clad in light jackets. Hats, mittens, and boots were replaced by smiles and happy faces.

A weekend enjoying family, Easter concerts, and church events without shoveling snow brought relief to everyone. This was especially true for those who work diligently keeping our roads clear.

Chairwoman Orice Walters called the meeting to order as the group rose to recite “The Pledge of Allegiance ” and sing “God Bless America.” These are two traditions that the Golden K takes seriously and remains faithful to. Alyce Derwinski shows her passion and dedication to the club with beautiful piano playing.

Orice Walters led the singing, as the group filled the room with music. Nostalgia wafted about with renditions of “Sentimental Journey” and “Seems Like Old Times.”

“Welcome” was sung was for guest speaker Phyllis Carlson. Kathy Jo Anderson picked up winnings from the 50-50 drawing and Happy Birthday was wished to Bill Trudell for April 10. Anniversary congratulations went to William and Anna Vincent for April 15.

For many years, Phyllis Carlson has been involved in rehab for animals. As part of this experience, she guides walks through wooded areas informing people about the local fauna.

She explains the importance of looking carefully at plants, flowers, birds, insects and animals. It’s an intricate, connected web where each element contributes to another’s survival. Even the dreaded mosquito is important as it spreads pollen.

Carlson presented a PowerPoint presentation of spring through fall flowers. She has an abundance of knowledge of flowers, weeds, and plants that are native to this area. Her pictures and information were educational and eye opening.

Carlson reminds us to be respectful of all things nature’s gifts to us. There is a reason for each tree, flower, and blade of grass.

The presentation gave the Golden K members incentive to care for and appreciate the local flora and fauna.

In the past, many plants were used for medicinal purposes. Some are beneficial for eating while others are poisonous. The key is to see beauty in all things. It is wise to understand plants and learn as much as you can about them. Respecting the environment around us helps keep beauty growing as nature intended.

The Golden K will meet at 10 a.m. Monday, with County Commissioner Joe Stevens as guest speaker. All are welcomed.

Starting at $3.50/week.
