Food boxes available for Florence County senior citizens Tuesday

FLORENCE, Wis. — It can be a real challenge for seniors to continue to eat healthy as they age. Mobility issues, fixed incomes, medication changes and, right now, COVID-19 all can present barriers.

To assist seniors in accessing quality nutrition sources, Feeding America of Northeast Wisconsin will provide a limited number of food boxes Tuesday for Florence County seniors age 60 years and older.

Feeding America has partnered with various local agencies — including the Aging and Disability Resource Center, Human Services, St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry and University of Wisconsin-Madison/Division of Extension — to identify seniors in need and to help with distribution.

While agencies are in contact with some seniors who are in need through programs such as energy assistance and home-delivered meals, they are aware they have not yet connected with others in the county.

In order to increase the agencies’ reaches, anyone age 60 or older who would like to receive a food box should contact the ADRC of Florence County at 715-528-4890 or adrc@co.florence.wi.us.

The ADRC will gather names, addresses and phone numbers and discuss distribution options — some boxes can be delivered directly but clients may also be asked to go to a distribution site near their home to pick up the food box.
