DCCT offers free theater program
KINGSFORD — Dickinson County Community Theatre this summer will offer Sunday Theater Afternoons, a free program to learn about acting and the theater experience as the community reopens from COVID-19.
Rodney Kjell, DCCT president, will host the sessions at 3 p.m. starting this Sunday and continuing July 11, July 23, Aug. 8 and Aug. 22 at DCCT’s “Blue Building,” 704 Skidmore Drive in Kingsford. The site is adjacent to Beaulier’s Buildings, just east of the Carpenter Avenue and Breen Street intersection.
The sessions will begin with introductions and acting warm-up exercises. Activities planned include theater games, opportunities to read monologues in front of a supportive audience, and quick scene acting. Small groups will get a scene, decide who gets which role and act out the scene for the group.
Improvisation will be done as well — one exercise is the alphabet game, in which players tell a made-up story, starting with the letter A, with each player starting his or her part with the next letter of the alphabet. There will be opportunity to create new skits from group members’ suggestions.
Actors and aspiring actors of all ages should enjoy this summer program. A feature of the DCCT grounds on Skidmore is a newly uncovered outdoor stage, a 6-by-27.5-feet area that is ideal for open-air plays and skits.
