Bay College sculptural exhibition now open
A view of the Jason Schneider exhibit now on display at the Besse Gallery at Bay College in Escanaba.
ESCANABA — Bay College has an exhibition of sculptural work by Jason Schneider in the Besse Gallery through Dec. 3.
An artist talk and demonstration will take place at 2 p.m. Eastern time Tuesday.
Schneider received a bachelor of fine arts degree in furniture design from William Paterson University and an master of fine arts in furniture design from San Diego State University. His work has been widely exhibited, including such venues as the Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Snowmass, Colo.; Aspen Art Museum in Colorado; Center for Art in Wood in Philadelphia; Museum of Craft and Design in San Francisco; and the Neuberger Museum in SUNY Purchase, N.Y.
Schneider is currently an assistant professor in the woodworking and furniture design program at Northern Michigan University in Marquette.
Schneider is a studio furniture maker who works with traditional woodworking processes in non-traditional materials to create unique three-dimensional objects.
His work reveals the inherent beauty and character of corrugated cardboard in both functional and sculptural forms. The study of the fine use and function of this low-status, recyclable, and often overlooked material drives his curiosity.
The artwork presented here is from a new series, titled “COLOR follows FORM follows TEXTURE.” As noted by the artist, “The corrugated textured sculptures I create are intended to provide the viewer with a distinct experience of light and shadow that changes in appearance depending on the directional cut of the material itself. Color is also used to add contrast to the paper and alter the visual weight to each form.”
