Bergonzi Trio to perform Tuesday
THE Bergonzi Trio, featuring Scott Flavin, Lindsay Garritson and Ross Harbaugh, will perform Tuesday at the Crystal Theatre in Crystal Falls as part of the Pine Mountain Music Festival events.
CRYSTAL FALLS — Crystal Theatre of Crystal Falls will be one of three venues for the 2022 Pine Mountain Music Festival offering a variety of events Tuesday, Wednesday and on June 20.
The festival’s theme, “Stories in Music,” will take a unique twist with puppetry added to a children’s concert with the Bergonzi Trio on Tuesday.
Trish Hensel from Michigan Technological University’s Department of Visual and Performing Arts will teach children puppetry skills and staging starting at 9:30 a.m.
The workshop culminates in a choreographed puppetry performance with the trio at 10:30 a.m. Children are invited to create the puppets the previous day at the Crystal Falls Library. To register for the workshops, contact Evelyn Gathu at 906-875-3344. The puppetry workshop and concert are both free to children and adult guardians.
The evening concert with The Bergonzi Trio begins at 7 p.m. at the Crystal Theatre.
Violinist Scott Flavin, cellist Ross Harbaugh and pianist Lindsay Garritson guide the audience on a storied journey from the beauty of Old-World Bohemia, through human struggle and ultimate triumph. This trio of musicians is a festival favorite — this time presenting masterworks by Shostakovich and Dvorak.
Tickets are available at pmmf.org and at the door.
PMMF Artistic Director Scott Flavin will lead a workshop in Peak Performance skills for music performers and music lovers from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Crystal Theatre.
Flavin is professor of violin at the University of Miami, violinist with the Bergonzi Trio and has been an active performer for decades. This free workshop is open to participants of all instruments and voice with some music performance experience from ages 15 to adult.
The final PMMF performance at the theatre at 7 p.m. Monday, June 20, will be the UPStarts! Concert, featuring mezzo soprano Julia Janowski and violinist Ben Campbella.
Since 2012, the UPStarts! program has provided young emerging singers and instrumentalists from the U.P. the opportunity to perform in a professional music festival. Chosen by audition, the young musicians afford audiences the chance to enjoy the impressive talent that comes from U.P. communities.
Julia Janowski, a native of Marquette and graduate of Michigan State University, has sung in a variety of genres, including opera, choral, sacred and folk music. Recently, Janowski was a fellow at the Classic Lyric Arts Festival in France.
Ben Campbell is a 20-year-old violinist born and raised in Escanaba. A graduate of Escanaba High School, Campbell is currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in violin performance at the Lawrence University Conservatory of Music in Appleton, Wis.
Both musicians are accompanied by Susan Byykkonen, the festival’s staff accompanist. Byykkonen is an independent music teacher in Houghton County, teaching a full studio of flute and piano students. An active member of the Lake Superior Music Teachers Association, she serves as minister of music for Portage Lake United Church, Houghton. Over the past 10 years, she has performed with the PMMF, serving as pianist and coordinator for the UPStarts! Program.
The UPStarts! Concert is offered free of charge.
The Pine Mountain Music Festival was founded in Iron Mountain in 1991 by Laura Jean Deming, a cellist and member of the orchestra of Lyric Opera of Chicago.
Information about all the festival events, including those in Marquette and Houghton, can be found online at pmmf.org.
