SAGOLA TOWNSHIP — A Wisconsin man died Monday morning after his vehicle collided with a fuel tanker truck on M-95 at the M-69 intersection in Sagola, causing a fuel leak that shut down the highway for hours and prompted evacuation of some nearby homes and businesses.
The crash happened about 9:23 a.m. when the 62-year-old man failed to yield at the intersection to the northbound tanker truck, which pushed the vehicle about 550 feet into the ditch, according to a news release from the Michigan State Police Iron Mountain post.
The driver of the tanker truck, a 36-year-old Wisconsin man, had no injuries.
Traffic had to be rerouted and some people cleared from businesses and nearby homes as a safety precaution while cleanup took place, authorities said. The highway reopened just after 5 p.m.
No names have been released in the crash, which remains under investigation.
Troopers were assisted by the Dickinson County Road Commission, American Red Cross, STAR Ambulance Service, Sagola Fire and Rescue, Breitung Township Volunteer Fire Department, Alpha-Mastodon Township Fire Department and L.R. Vincent Towing.
