Bids for Kingsford Public Safety building work approved

KINGSFORD — The Kingsford City Council has approved bids for work to make the Kingsford Public Safety building more accessible and compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The council accepted:

— A $9,650 bid from St. George Glass of Iron Mountain to replace the front entrance door; $18,000 had been budgeted.

— A $24,000 bid from Universal Plumbing in Iron Mountain to update a bathroom. The budget had $23,000 for the bathroom, but City Manager Mike Stelmaszek said the project has been in the capital plan for several years.

Council members pointed out the city still would save money on the overall project. Only one bid was submitted for each contract.

Stelmaszek also opened three engineering bids for the Westwood Avenue resurfacing project from Woodward Avenue to Brookfield Street.

U.P. Engineers & Architects Inc. of Iron Mountain bid $49,530, GEI Consultants of Iron Mountain $78,908 and Coleman Engineering of Iron Mountain $37,600.

Stelmaszek said he and Public Works Superintendent Jeff DeMuri will examine the bids and make a recommendation at the next meeting.

The project includes replacing all the water services going into each residence, as required by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality.

In other business, the council —

— Approved the purchase and development agreement for lots at Breen and Beech streets for $3,500 each. The property was purchased by G & E Realty for additional parking near a restaurant on Breen Avenue. Two of the four lots originally available were sold in 2020.

— Scheduled a public hearing for 6:45 p.m. Monday, March 15, as part of the process to receive a U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development Grant. The city is eligible for $26,500 toward a new squad car and must match the amount.

— Learned the city closed on the first property on North Pyle Drive. The city had purchased 4.7 acres of property to divide into seven residential lots. The council approved selling .67-acre Lot 105 for $9,380 in February.

— Tabled a decision on a letter from the Northwoods Garden Club seeking help in replacing the gazebo roof on city-owned property at Woodward Avenue and Balsam Street. Stelmaszek said he would like to look into it further but they would try to come to some mutual agreement for repairs.

— Asked Stelmaszek to come up with a resolution honoring Dolly Cook on her retirement as county clerk after 31 years. It will be signed by all the council members at an upcoming meeting and presented to her.

— Authorized DeMuri to sell some surplus items on the Wisconsin Surplus website. The council also approved sending four public works department staff members to a tree cutting safety class at Lake Antoine Park. Cost is $50 per person.
