Summer fun: Bass Fest, UP Rodeo, Norway picnic, Antoine concert this weekend

Crystal Falls is hosting the 57th annual Bass Festival, featuring a parade down Superior Avenue at 10 a.m. Saturday. This year’s theme is “American Heroes Who Serve.”
The parade will be followed by canoe races on the Paint River, with registration beginning at 11 a.m. and the race at 11:30 a.m. from the Crystal Falls Power Plant to the bridge at the bottom of Superior Avenue.
Events at Runkle Lake Park include a community picnic — with the well-known barbecued chicken starting at noon — along with volleyball tournament, softball game and music by Lovin’ Country from 1 to 6:30 p.m.
The Run Your Bass Off race starts at 9 a.m. Sunday at the park, with music by Sons of Legend to follow from 1 to 6 p.m. Children’s games, a fishing tournament, baby contest and horseshoes are among the other weekend activities organized through the Crystal Falls Lions Club.

Tufts Rondon VFW Post 2891 will serve breakfast from 8 a.m. to noon Sunday at 108 Superior Ave., Crystal Falls.
The U.P. Championship Rodeo opens today in Iron River — the only event in Michigan sanctioned by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. The first rodeo performance at the Iron County Fairgrounds is at 7 tonight; arena gates open at 5 p.m.
The Wild West Parade steps off at 10 a.m. Saturday on 4th Avenue in Iron River. Arena gates open at noon, followed by a 2 p.m. rodeo performance.
The 2022 Miss U.P. Rodeo Queen and U.P. Rodeo Princess will be crowned at 6:30 p.m. Saturday and the final rodeo performance is at 7 p.m.
In Florence, Wis., the Florence County Historical Society will host its annual Quilt Show and Strawberry Social from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Maxsells on Central Avenue.
On Sunday, the Vulcan-Norway-Loretto Lions Club will sponsor a community picnic from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Marion Park on U.S. 8 in Norway, featuring a grilled chicken dinner, refreshments, children’s games and prize drawings. Proceeds fund Lions Club projects in the Vulcan, Norway and Loretto areas.
Dickinson County Community Chorus will present a “Music Under the Stars” tribute to John R. Calo at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Lake Antoine Band Shell. In the event of bad weather, the free concert will be moved to First Presbyterian Church in Kingsford at 7:15 p.m. Sunday.
Also this weekend, the Logging & Heritage Festival in Marinette, Wis., includes music, lumberjack shows and BMX bike shows Saturday, along with a parade and car show Sunday.
Next weekend, the attention shifts to Iron Mountain, where Gus Macker basketball opens Friday, July 15, and runs through Sunday, July 17.
Gus Macker coincides with the Saturday in the Park fundraiser at City Park in Iron Mountain, taking place Friday, July 15, and Saturday, July 16.
