Not guilty plea for IM man accused of making school shooting threats

KYLE HOLMBERG

IRON MOUNTAIN — An Iron Mountain man accused in September of making a threat to carry out a school shooting has again been bound over to Dickinson County Circuit Court.

Kyle Anthony Holmberg, 30, had a not guilty plea entered on his behalf Tuesday to a charge of making a false report or threat of terrorism, a felony that carries a prison term of up to 20 years. He was not present, having waived arraignment.

The case was sent back to Dickinson County Circuit Court after Dickinson County District Court Judge Julie LaCost found probable cause to continue the case in a hearing Monday.

Holmberg’s case had been shifted to circuit court in November, but it returned to district court earlier this year.

According to the criminal complaint, Iron Mountain Police Department and Kingsford Public Safety Department became aware Sept. 24 of alleged threats to carry out a school shooting at either Woodland Elementary School in Kingsford or North Elementary School in Iron Mountain.

At Monday’s probable cause hearing, a co-worker, Joseph Hinds, testified Holmberg told him it would be easy to shoot up North Elementary School, where Hinds’ daughter is a student. Hinds said Holmberg made additional threats to Woodland Elementary.

When another co-worker told Holmberg making such threats is a felony offense, Holmberg reportedly said he would have them killed if they turned him in.

Patrolman Shawn Kelly of the Iron Mountain Police Department testified four weapons were found, along with ammunition, during a search of Holmberg’s apartment. The weapons included an AR-15, a .30-06 rifle, a .243 rifle and a .45 handgun. The AR-15 and .30-06 were later determined to belong to Holmberg’s roommate, Donald Sanderson.

Lt. Adam Ray, who at the time was the Iron Mountain Schools resource officer, was at the search and testified that cell phones and other electronic devices also were seized and sent to the Michigan State Police crime lab for analysis. During cross examination by Holmberg’s attorney, Abbey Anderson, Ray confirmed the devices had no evidence of violence.

A pretrial conference is set for April 22.
