IRON MOUNTAIN — It was both parents night and senior night for the Iron Mountain girls volleyball team Tuesday. On the court, head coach Jeanne Newberry and her team swept the Westwood Lady Patriots 3-0 (25-13, 25-14, 25-20) in West PAC Conference action.

It was also cancer awareness night, with the Lady Mountaineers wearing pink jerseys and most of the student section wearing pink of some sort. Newberry was complimentary of her four seniors, who competed in their final regular season home match.

“Our seniors played extremely well. Alex (Lewis) had 10 assists. Anna (Rittenhouse) served well, especially in the second set. Kalli Balmes and Reagan Lundholm both served well too, I’m proud of all four of them,” said Newberry.

IM dominated set one. Westwood came out lethargic, and the Mountaineers did exactly the opposite. With an 11-7 lead, sophomore Annslee Runsat took the ball and served the Mountaineers on an 11-point run. She had seven aces to give IM a 22-7 lead. The match point was earned on a hard kill by Leah Larsen.

Set two began with Lexi Hagen serving for the Mountaineers. With her serving, and strong all-around play, IM got out to a 6-1 lead. The score went back and forth for the middle part of the set until Rittenhouse’s turn to serve came up.

With a four-point run to finish the match, Rittenhouse finished off the visitors from Marquette County to take the second set in almost as dominating fashion as the first. Westwood couldn’t overcome the Mountaineers’ serving in either of the first two sets.

In the final set, the Patriots kept pace with IM in the first half. With the score 10-8, Balmes’ turn to serve came up. With three aces in the run, and the strong front row play of McKenna Smith, Bella Rosenthal and Lewis, IM went on a nine-point run.

Westwood fought back however, going on a five-point run of their own behind the serving of Livvie Wood to bring the score to 23-20 Mountaineers.

IM broke Wood’s momentum to bring up match and set point. Runsat served the ball and it hit off a Westwood player and went out of bounds to secure the win for the Mountaineers.

“As we look at Nov. 6, it’s districts for us,” Newberry said. “We work all year to hone our skills, to be ready to perform strong in the postseason.”

IM faces the winner of the L’Anse at Ironwood match, which will be played on Monday. If L’Anse prevails over district host Ironwood, they’ll travel to IM. If Ironwood defeats L’Anse, the Mountaineers will make the trek to Ironwood for the aforementioned Nov. 6 round two matchup.

IM won the JV match 2-0 (25-13, 25-6).
