Edgewood College women’s basketball team, coached by former area resident Chaia (VanGoethem) Huff, is off to a 9-0 start. That’s the best in history for the Madison, Wis., school..

Chaia is the daughter of Norway grad Jeff and Karen (Gladstone) VanGoethem and granddaughter of Jerry and Donna VanGoethem.

Edgewood, beating teams by more than 20 points per game, looks to be playing as well as those great Barb Perry-coached Norway teams led by Chaia’s “Aunt Carol.” ….

Note to ma and pa, baseball gloves for your kids not a bad idea. Baseball’s minimum wage increases to $563,500 next year …

Nice to know Aaron Bearrs has been a thorn in the paw to more than the Mountaineers.

Bearss, who helped Pewamo-Westphalia beat Iron Mountain in the state basketball finals and football semifinals, intercepted a pass and scored on a touchdown pass when the Pirates beat Lumen Christi for the Division 7 football crown.

Bearss also played a role in PW reaching the state baseball semifinals.

By the way, kudos to Coach Robin Marttila and the Mountaineers taking an unbeaten record into the state football semifinals. Wasn’t that long ago when the Mountaineers battled roster numbers problem — athletic trainer Ryan Peroceschi filled in as the scout team quarterback back then — but they persevered to attain excellence …

Asked about overtures from NBA teams over the years, Izzo indicates there’s been more than four.

Tommy, who can get a little hot under the collar during games, saw a sign reading the “Angry Midget” at Ann Arbor that drew a laugh from the coach. Tommy went up to the sign-holder and shook his hand.

Tommy’s buddy, Steve Mariucci, said the diminutive Izzo has never seen a parade …
