Bark River trips up Forest Park

HARRIS — The Bark River-Harris boys basketball team didn’t feel its performance against Norway Friday was representative of its potential.

The Broncos proved that to themselves and their fans on their home court Monday with a dominant first quarter on their way to a 57-41 victory over the Forest Park Trojans.

“The team wanted to come out and make a statement,” BR-H coach Marc Zawacki said. “Our last performance, we didn’t do the things we wanted to do. We weren’t happy with the way we played. The kids wanted to come out and play tough tonight and play our style of basketball. I think they did that tonight.”

The Broncos started off the Skyline Central Conference contest with a layup from Nick Javurek just eight seconds into the first quarter, which kicked off an 8-0 run until a little over two minutes later when Keal Emmers sank a triple to put the Trojans on the board.

The Broncos (5-2, 5-2 SCC) pulled away further with just over five minutes left.

Forest Park added its final points of the quarter when Tommy Peltoma laid one in with some help from Emmers to make it 12-5.

Bark River locked down on the Trojans in the final three minutes and added five more to lead 17-5.

“We got down early, and we didn’t come to play — that’s what it seemed like,” Trojans coach Kurt Lehmann said. “Obviously, they did some things that made us uncomfortable, but that’s the thing — in this league, you can’t take nights or quarters off.”

Forest Park (5-3, 4-2 SCC) had difficulty in the first five minutes of the second quarter, falling behind further as the Broncos went on a 15-4 run.

“I think we didn’t come to play and (Bark River) did,” Lehmann said. “I give credit to them. They hit some shots, got in some passing lanes, and we were lazy in all those things. That’s the difference in a good league.”

Bark River led by at least 13 the rest of the way.

“We got everybody in, and we had a good team effort,” coach Zawacki said. “When you’re running that up-tempo style, guys are going to be a little winded, so we cycled guys through as much as we could. I thought we got some really good minutes for the guys coming off the bench.”

The Broncos were led by Riley Bray with 17 points and four treys. Zawacki followed with 13 points.

Emmers led the Trojans with 16 points.

“Keall Emmers (had a good game), especially with how we were playing,” Lehmann said.

Bark River won the JV game 50-19. Forest Park visits West Iron County Thursday.
