Kingsford rally falls short, 60-47

KINGSFORD — Kingsford chipped away at Marquette’s 22-point halftime lead before falling 60-47 in Great Northern Conference boys basketball Thursday.

“I was proud of how the boys responded,” said Flivvers coach Dan Olkkonen. “We were up against the wall in Menominee on Monday at the half and we didn’t fight back, but tonight was different story.”

Cole Bracket led Kingsford with 17 points. The Redmen were paced by Kam Karp’s 16 points.

Marquette drained six triples in the first half, taking a 38-16 lead. The Flivvers (3-8, 0-5) battled to within nine points with 2:30 remaining in the game.

“We had some great individual efforts on the defensive side and it gave us a spark,” Olkkonen said. “Marquette is a very good team and well-coached, and we just got down too far to make it any closer.”

Kingsford’s Brody Kopp contributed eight points, five rebounds and three steals. Andrew Paupore added seven points.

Marquette won the JV game, 57-48. Cade Counter and Nathan Bousley scored 13 points each for the Flivvers.

The Kingsford freshmen prevailed 59-30, led by Troy Watt with 13 points and Charlie Christesen, 12 points.

Kingsford will host Norway in a non-conference boys and girls doubleheader Tuesday, with the boys varsity game tipping off at 5:15 p.m.
