Springer buries triple at buzzer for Florence victory

FLORENCE, Wis. — With three seconds remaining on the clock, Florence senior guard Jenna Springer caught a pass well behind the three-point line and drained a game-winner as the LadyCats prevailed 44-41 over the Elcho Hornets in Northern Lakes Conference action here Thursday night.

“Tonight was a total team effort, especially during the waning seconds, during the last possession of the game,” said Florence head coach Brad Perry. “I am proud of the girls. We stuck to our game plan and took home an exciting win.

Despite trailing by six points at halftime and by nine early in the second half, Perry noted that the girls fought back a couple of different times to keep the game within reach in a back-and-forth second half.

Katie Slowik canned 20 points for the Hornets to lead all scorers. She was co-NLC Player of the Year last season. Springer led Florence with 12 points, with Madison Neuens adding eight points.

Florence led 41-39 with 22 seconds left in the game. Elcho tied it with two Slowik free throws. After an initial inbounds pass, the LadyCats passed the ball along, with all five players touching it, until Springer launched the buzzer-beater for the win.

“The crowd exploded and everyone was excited. It was a great way to win,” Perry said.

Florence (8-8, 3-4) travels to NLC powerhouse Crandon on Tuesday.
