IM’s Johnson eclipses 2,000 points, passes Magic on state’s all-time list

Senior scores 28 as Mountaineers poised for second straight 20-0 season

Theresa Proudfit/The Daily News IRON MOUNTAIN’S MARCUS Johnson fires a jumper against Gladstone Tuesday evening. The senior passed Magic Johnson on the state’s career scoring list.

IRON MOUNTAIN — Iron Mountain senior Marcus Johnson has joined elite and exclusive company.

The senior and all-time leading scorer in school history netted 28 points in Iron Mountain’s 95-55 rout over Gladstone Tuesday, giving him 2,016 for his career.

The MHSAA’s record book shows just 42 players all-time at 2,000 or more points. Johnson’s game Tuesday pushed him ahead of NBA Hall of Famer Earvin “Magic” Johnson, who scored 2,012 points while playing for Lansing Everett from 1974-77.

“It just blows me away,” Iron Mountain Athletic Director Donnie Bianco said. “It’s a very impressive milestone. Few very players have reached 2,000 in state history. It’s a testament to Marcus’ dedication and his work ethic to simply be the best that he can be.”

Needing 12 points to reach 2,000 entering play Tuesday, Johnson buried a free throw in the first quarter for the milestone, as fans in attendance celebrated with cheers and posters marking the historic feat.

Foster Wonders, who has more than 1,500 career points himself, recorded a double-double and game high 35 points and 10 rebounds in the victory as Iron Mountain set the stage for a second straight 20-0 regular season when they face Negaunee Thursday.

“Gladstone has been playing some pretty good ball lately and attacked tonight,” said Mountaineer head coach Harvey “Bucky” Johnson. “Marcus got us off to a good start then Foster got hot. Tonight was a good night overall, and the kids battled real well on the boards all night.”

Noah Ballard led the Braves with 13 points in the Mid-Peninsula tilt.

The 19-0 Mountaineers remain home for the regular season finale Thursday night. Negaunee comes in at 17-2.

“That is a huge game for us,” coach Johnson said.

With a win Thursday night, it would be the Mountaineers’ second 20-0 season in a row.

CRYSTAL FALLS — The North Central boys didn’t make it easy on themselves, but they found a way to persevere for a 49-46 overtime victory at Forest Park Tuesday night in a Skyline Central Conference boys basketball tilt.

The Jets (13-6, 13-5 SCC) trailed 18-16 at the half, then went up by two at the end of the third quarter before needing overtime to pull off the win.

“We tried shooting ourselves in the foot several times and pulled out a win in overtime,” Jets coach Mike Malone said. “We played really well at times, but at the end of the game we had a lot of miscues. But we kept battling and kept battling and persevered to get the win. We’ll take it.”

Luke Gorzinski led the Jets with 19 points. Keal Emmers had 15 for the Trojans (8-12, 7-9 SCC), while Tommy Showers added 11.

“Overall it was a really good game on both sides, and they (NC) were able to hit some shots and get a couple big rebounds down the stretch that we weren’t able to,” said Trojans head coach Kurt Lehmann.

“We had a lot of turnovers tonight and that’s the difference in big games. We had a shot go at the end of regulation that got waved off so we definitely had our chances but couldn’t capitalize,” Lehmann added.

“We did a lot of good things and a lot of bad things as well,” Malone said. “We need to shore up our mistakes if we want to win in the postseason. We gotta shore up our turnovers for sure. It’s one thing to say it but another thing to do it. We persevered through it, guys didn’t hang their heads, and we kept getting after it. I’m proud of them for that.”

The Jets, who also won the JV game, wrap up their regular season at home against Mid Peninsula for Senior Night Thursday. Forest Park will make preparations to travel to Carney-Nadeau to face the Wolves on Monday night, to open up MHSAA District play.
