Niagara and undefeated Oneida Nation meet for a third time
NIAGARA, Wis. — Oneida Nation may be a perfect 24-0, but facing a team for the third time in a season offers no guarantees.
On Thursday night, Niagara travels to Elcho for their third try against the Marinette-Oconto Conference foe.
The WIAA Division 5 sectional semifinal game is scheduled to tip off at 7 p.m.
Coached by Karl Lamoreaux, Niagara has reeled off seven straight wins to improve to 17-8 on the season.
“Our confidence is high due to our winning streak,” Lamoreaux said. “Oneida Nation is a very good team and have been in the M&O for four seasons.”
Oneida Nation defeated Niagara 59-47 on Dec. 20 and 63-48 on Feb. 7.
“We were in each game at different points,” Lamoreaux said. “They sealed the game in Niagara with free throws.”
Oneida Nation was 16-for-19 from the free-throw line in game one at Niagara, and 18-of-22 in game two.
“We can’t get into that kind of game with them again,” Lamoreaux noted.
The Badgers are a different team now than when they played the Thunderhawks previously. Four-year senior starters Cassie Gill and Jasmine Racine were in and out of the lineup due to injuries at that time.
Lamoreaux also pointed out that freshman Josie Rock, who is now a regular starter, was on the JV squad during the other two games.
“She has made a difference since being brought up to the varsity team,” Lamoreaux said. “It’s very good to see, the team that I thought I was going to have at the beginning of the year, come together now.”
Oneida Nation needed overtime Saturday to defeat Wausaukee, 71-70 for its regional title.
The Badgers knocked off Gillett 58-54.
Winner of Thursday’s game heads to the sectional championship, slated for 7 p.m. Saturday at Bowler.
