GOODMAN, Wis. — With three players in double figures, led by Ellie Ashbach with a game-high 21 points, the Elcho Hornets defeated Goodman-Pembine 56-20 in non-conference girls basketball action Friday at the Laverne A. Zimmerman Sports Center.
Erica Manka chipped in 13 points, while Lexi Ernst added 10 points for the Hornets in the win. The Lady Patriots, in their first varsity game of the season, were led in scoring by senior Grace Massey with 13 points.
Because of WIAA rules, Goodman-Pembine is playing a partial varsity and partial JV schedule this season, due to opting out early in the 2019-20 season for a lack of players.
The Hornets got out to a 16-0 lead before the Patriots got on the scoreboard. G-P did go on a 5-0 scoring run at that point, but ended up trailing 39-12 at the intermission.
“We have eight players now that the season has started, these eight come to practice every day with a positive attitude,” said first-year head coach Brian Waitrovich. “They try to do everything that’s asked of them.”
Waitrovich noted improvement from the first game the girls played on Tuesday night. The score of that game, which was played at Crandon, was Crandon JV 37, Goodman-Pembine 12.
The Lady Patriots’ next game is also a varsity game, on Friday at Pembine as they host White Lake at 6 p.m.
Elcho 39 17 — 56
G-P 12 8 — 20
