Kingsford holds off Gladstone rally
Flivvers put four hoopsters in double figures for 87-79 GNC win
KINGSFORD — Gladstone and Kingsford took turns lighting the scoreboard as the Flivvers prevailed 87-79 in a high-scoring Great Northern Conference boys basketball opener Friday.
Sophomore point guard Nic Nora led Kingsford with 23 points, including 16 in the fourth quarter.
“Nic had a great fourth quarter and controlled most of the end of the game,” said Kingsford coach Dan Olkkonen.
The Flivvers opened a 16-point lead but the Braves rallied behind Cameron Ballard, who finished with 23 points, including 15 in the fourth.
Nora held off Gladstone’s late charge with four straight free throws.
“We’re a pretty fast team and we have a deeper bench than in many years,” Olkkonen said. “It was kind of a wide-open game.”
Cole Bracket added 17 points for the Flivvers and Brody Kopp netted 14. Michael Meneguzzo also hit double figures with 12 points, including 10 in the first half.
Kingsford took the jayvee game 47-36 but Gladstone’s freshmen prevented a sweep, winning 50-37.
Kingsford (2-0, 1-0) plays at Iron Mountain on Tuesday.
