Flivvers, Wykons and Trojans girls suffer defeats

MARQUETTE — Kingsford rallied in the second half before falling to Marquette 58-46 in Great Northern Conference girls basketball Tuesday.

“Our intensity was great in the second half,” said Kingsford coach Jon Lorenzoni, who saw his team get within a point of Marquette with a little over 4 minutes to go. “We were right there,” he said. “Talia Wallis and Lizzy Cross started hitting shots. We rebounded better. There’s definitely some stuff we can build on.”

Wallis led the Flivvers with 13 points and Cross scored 11.

Maria Mallado paced the Redettes with 19 points, including 10 in the fourth quarter.

Lorenzoni was less pleased with the first half.

“Marquette scored the first 10 points of the game,” he said. “We are not good enough right now to dig a hole like that. Way too many turnovers.”

The Redettes enjoyed a 26-16 advantage at halftime but the Flivvers closed to within 39-34 entering the fourth.

Kingsford (1-6) hosts North Dickinson on Thursday at 5:15 p.m in a non-conference game.
