Wykon boys get 3rd straight win

Sink 17 of 17 free throws against Hematites

IRON RIVER — Nathan Thomson lifted West Iron to an early lead and the Wykons hung on for a 59-47 win over Ishpeming in a WestPAC Conference boys basketball game Tuesday.

Thomson scored 19 of his game-high 23 points in the first half as the Wykons went into the break up 31-17.

“It’s nice to have Nate back from the ankle injury,” coach Dan Schive said.

West Iron, which has won three straight since Thomson’s return, got 22 points from Justin Nelson.

The Wykons were 17 of 17 on free throws, with Thomson and Nelson each draining seven and Mitchell Ballinger sinking three.

“I didn’t even realize it until after the game,” Schive said. “I don’t think I’ve had a team go perfect from the free throw line before.”

Jayce Kipling and Logan Hurkmans each scored 21 for the Hematites.

West Iron (5-5) will host Gwinn on Thursday and travel to Forest Park on Friday.

Ishpeming won the JV game.
