Badgers finish one run short

MARINETTE, Wis. — Niagara scored a run in each of the last two innings but it wasn’t enough to overcome a six-run second inning by the home team as STAA-Lena defeated the Badgers 10-9 here Thursday in a Marinette-Oconto Conference baseball game.

Mason Richtig led the Badgers with 3 RBIs and two hits, including a double. Dawson Lincoln, Ross Shampo and Blake Holmes also cracked two hits. Shampo and Holmes each drove in a run as well.

“A great job by all the kids tonight. They gave it their all and kept battling till the end and almost pulled out a great win,” said Badgers head coach Dean Neveau. “Kids seem to be getting what we’ve been teaching them now and things are starting to come together.”

Richtig and Blake Holmes toed the mound for Niagara. They combined to walk nine, while Richtig struck out four batters.

Niagara returns home to host M&O foe Wausaukee on Monday.
