QUINNESEC — In a non-conference game, Iron Mountain traveled to face Twin City rival Kingsford at Quinnesec Field with the host Flivvers taking a 3-2 win.
It didn’t take long for the Flivvers to get rolling Thursday as they plated two runs in the home half of the first inning making the score 2-0.
That score held true into the 4th inning when Iron Mountain’s Ian Anderson scored on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Jurgen Kleiman.
In the bottom half of the 4th, the Flivvers matched the Mountaineers’ run when Henry McRoberts took advantage of some solid base running and scored from third base on a throw to second on a successful steal by Connor Erickson.
In the top of the 6th, Iron Mountain threatened to break the two-run deficit again with Caleb Evosovich-Hynes standing on third with one out. A fly ball to center fielder Nathan Bousley created a huge momentum swing when Bousley caught the second out and was able to gun down Evosovich-Hynes at the plate to end the inning.

Bousley’s throw was on target and Kingsford catcher Carter Kreski blocked the plate and applied the tag on the speedy Evosevich-Hynes.
“The play by Nathan Bousley was the spark we needed when we had our backs to the wall,” said Kingsford head coach Matt LaLonde. “Nathan is the type of player that can ignite excitement in everyone, fans, players and coaches.”
In the final inning Iron Mountain rallied again to get runners in scoring position and closed the gap. With two runners on base and two outs, the Flivvers hurler, Sawyer Pugh, exited the game after meeting his pitch count and left it up to Riley Juneau to close it out.
After a hit batsman and a base hit, Juneau was able to get Iron Mountain’s Blake Julian to ground out to the Flivvers shortstop to end the game.
“Sawyer Pugh pitched his best game for us tonight, pitching for 20 of the 21 outs in the game. He was throwing hard and had great control,” said LaLonde. “Assistant coach Mark Allen has been saying all year that he was waiting for Sawyer (Pugh) to have a game like this on the mound. Mark (Allen) does a great job working with our pitchers.”
LaLonde also gave credit to pitcher Ian Anderson of Iron Mountain as he came in to relieve Zeke Runsat and threw harder than any pitcher the Flivvers have seen this year.
“Ian (Anderson) is a really nice pitcher and will have a lot of success down the road. Iron Mountain has a lot of talented ballplayers on their team. We knew we had to play error-free baseball tonight and that is what we did,” LaLonde stated.
On the mound for Kingsford, Pugh and Juneau combined to allow six hits. They fanned six and allowed two walks. For the Mountaineers, Runsat and Anderson combined for four hits, fanned eight and walked five.
At the plate, Kingsford’s Dennis Neuens, Nolan LaVarnway, McRoberts and Bousley all had one hit apiece. For Iron Mountain, Evosovich-Hynes had two, while Bryce Pietrantonio, Hunter Fortner, Evan Haferkorn and Anderson each had one.
The Mountaineers host the West PAC Conference Tournament today at LiUNA Field in Iron Mountain. The Flivvers remain home to host Great Northern Conference foe Menominee on Monday.
