FLORENCE, Wis. — Florence swept a girls softball doubleheader against Niagara on Friday, winning the opener 3-2 in six innings and the nightcap 10-2.
Sidney Tomczak tossed a one-hitter for Florence in the opening pitcher’s duel, striking out eight and walking three. Noelle Champagne toed the mound for the Badgers, also allowing just one hit, walking six and fanning seven.
Isabella Millan had Florence’s only hit while Abigail Richtig had the Badgers’ lone mark off Tomczak.
“A really competitive, fun game,” said Florence coach Dan Robinson.
“Florence is well coached,” said Niagara first-year coach Brad Richtig. “Solid all the way around. I was very happy how our girls came out and played. Very happy at the way we are progressing early on.”
Florence’s offense came alive in the second game, with Millan, Paige Uren and Madison Johnson cracking two hits apiece. Tomczak added a triple.
Tomczak and her sister Morgan Tomczak pitched, with Sidney going three innings, fanning three, and allowing one hit. Morgan whiffed three and gave up a pair of walks.
Abby Wells pitched for Niagara.
“Niagara showed good sportsmanship and is a lot of fun to play,” said Robinson. “Our girls are stepping it up each and every game.”
… Niagara entered the game coming off an 18-1 win over Wausaukee on Thursday.
Starting pitcher Champagne gave up one hit and fanned nine batters in the Marinette-Oconto Conference matchup. Champagne, a senior, also had two hits, two RBI’s and nine stolen bases in the contest.
“Overall, the girls played a good game,” said Richtig. “We also had good plate discipline.”
Haley Allred and Lillian Loukus each tallied 2 RBIs for Niagara while Wells had seven stolen bases against the Rangers.
Niagara travels to Gillett-Suring on Monday and will be at Norway on Tuesday for a doubleheader.
