Badgers no-hit STAA but fall, 3-0

MARINETTE, Wis. — Despite their two pitchers combining to not allow a hit, Niagara was on the losing end of a 3-0 game to St. Thomas Aquinas Academy here Tuesday in a Marinette-Oconto Conference Tournament baseball game.

The Badgers surrendered two runs in the home half of the third inning and one run the next inning. A STAA base runner crashed into Niagara’s shortstop, with runner interference not being called, and that’s when the Cavaliers plated two runs.

“I am happy with how the kids played; they didn’t quit, despite the adversity in the game,” Niagara head coach Dean Neveau said. “The other run we gave up after the interference play was on an error.”

Blake Holmes and Mason Richtig toed the mound for Niagara, with Holmes fanning four STAA hitters.

“Our pitchers pitched great, but they did walk too many batters. But they battled their way through trouble at different points of the game,” Neveau said. “They (STAA) made the plays they needed to make today — hat’s off to them.”

The Badgers are scheduled to play at Gillett-Suring today in the consolation game of the M&O Conference Tournament.

No. 6-seed Niagara will be at No. 3-seed Laona-Wabeno for the WIAA Regionals at 4:30 p.m. June 10.
