KINGSFORD — In front of a loud and enthusiastic crowd, with a large student section from each school, the first of two rivalry volleyball duals this season was held as the host Flivvers swept Iron Mountain 3-0 (25-14, 25-6, 27-25) Tuesday night at the Kingsford Middle School Gymnasium.
Iron Mountain got off to a smooth start, taking an 11-7 lead after see-saw play in the early stages of the opening set. Kingsford senior Talia Wallis got the ball and served the Flivvers to a 13-11 lead, with a handful of aces in the scoring run.
“Playing Kingsford is always competitive for us. The gym is loud and excited, which makes the girls excited, tonight was no different,” said Iron Mountain head coach Jeanne Newberry.
After some more back and forth scoring, Kingsford’s Grace Roberts powered — literally — the Flivvers to a 21-14 lead with hard hitting and accurate serving. The home team went on to win set No. 1, 25-14.
The second set was dominated by the Flivvers. With Iron Mountain scoring first, Kingsford freshman Madelynn Kreider’s pin-point serving gave the Flivvers a 10-1 lead. Kreider finished the night with seven aces.
“The girls were super accurate with their serving in that set (No. 2),” said Flivvers head coach Jaclynn Kreider. “They were placing the ball where coach (Jamie) Momont was instructing them to place it, which is a credit to them.”
Floor awareness from the host Flivvers also helped to overwhelm the Mountaineers in the second set.
“We got caught in a bad round of serve receives in set two, those things happen sometimes and it’s hard to break the momentum,” Newberry said.
“Accurate serving can change the game, and ours did in set two,” coach Kreider added. “We knew tonight was going to be a battle. Iron Mountain is an athletic team, who as of latehave been successful.”
The final set was very competitive. It was back and forth with neither team taking more than a two-point advantage throughout. The seesawing action had the crowd very into the action on the floor.
“We were rattled in set three. We started missing our serves and had other errors,” said coach Kreider. “Iron Mountain gave us all we could handle in that set, and we were fortunate to win it.”
With the score knotted at 25-25, it was the Flivvers who eked out a 27-25 win.
“For the girls to come back mentally and physically strong in the third set, I am very proud of them for showing that heart, after the way the second set went,” Newberry said.
Iron Mountain returns home to welcome non-conference foe Escanaba to the Mountaineer Gymnasium on Monday, while the Flivvers host Gladstone on Thursday in a make-up match from Sept. 2.
In the jayvee contest, Kingsford defeated the Mountaineers, 2-1 (24-26, 25-22, 25-12).
