Mid Pen defeats North Central in volleyball

POWERS — North Central provided an early challenge, but Mid Peninsula prevailed in a 3-0 (25-23, 25-14, 25-10) volleyball triumph over the Jets here Tuesday night.

A block by Mid Pen senior Landry Koski secured the opener in this Skyline Central Conference match.

The Jets, however, hung with the Wolverines in the second set and were within 15-12 following a Mid Pen passing error.

Following a sideout, the Wolverines gained a 17-12 cushion on a service ace by junior Alexa Haring.

Koski then helped the Wolverines close out that set by collecting five of her 10 kills.

“Our team chemistry is coming along very well,” said Mid Pen coach Emily Kayser. “Our girls in the back row made good passes to our setter, and Landry played such a good match tonight.”

Mid Pen quickly took charge in the third, gaining a 10-1 lead behind a five-point service run by sophomore Josie Hemminger.

“We came out strong in the first set,” said Jets’ coach Rick Mick. “We challenged the girls to come out strong, play hard and fast, and they did that. Only, our energy dropped off in the third set. We got great support from our football players, and the girls fed off that.”

Mid Pen led 24-19 in the first, then committed a series of miscues, enabling the Jets to climb within 24-23.

Koski, receiving heavy defensive attention, added two blocks to go with her 10 kills. She also collected five aces and four digs.

“Landry is a great player,” said Mick. “Anybody would be lucky to have her on their team. Our goal is to always get a hand on the ball at the net and steal some momentum from the other team.”

Senior setter Shae Lampinen provided the Wolverines with six digs and eight assists. Junior Kora Prater had nine digs. Junior Avery Croasdell added eight digs, and sophomore setter Maddie VanDamme tallied six assists.

LaCoursier led the Jets with four kills and two blocks. Senior Katelyn Deming added three kills, and sophomore Emma Sampson had six digs.

In the JV match, Mid Pen sophomore Kristin Koth hit nine aces in a 25-15, 25-21 victory.

The Jets host Rapid River tonight.
