’Cats rip Wausaukee for second consecutive win
WAUSAUKEE — The 2021-22 Florence Bobcats are an athletic team with quickness, a fine perimeter offensive game and the hunger and competitiveness to hound other teams defensively.
So when they come across teams that just can’t match up with all of that, the games can become lopsided. That’s what has happened in the Florence’s first two games.
After defeating Niagara by 49 points in their opener Nov. 23, the visiting Bobcats were even more dominant in their second outing, routing host Wausaukee 85-18 on Monday night.
Florence (2-0) placed four players in double figures in the win. Senior Patrick Milan and junior Evan Johnson scored 17 points each, while William Kelley added 16 and Dustin Williams chipped in with 12.
Nine of the 10 Bobcats who played got into the scoring column.
“Everyone contributed tonight and did a nice job,” Florence coach Bryan Bomberg said.
While the offense was clicking again, Bomberg said it was his team’s defense which led to the offense.
“We really got after it defensively, which led to a lot of easy transition baskets,” he added.
The Rangers managed only seven field goals in the contest and just two three-pointers.
The Bobcats shot 52% from the field overall and sank 7 of 18 from behind the 3-point arc. Kelley sank 4 of 5 to led the sharpshooters, while Johnson hit 2 of 5.
With everything clicking from the get-go, Florence built a 50-13 lead at halftime and then outscored the Rangers 35-5 in the second half.
Florence showed its scoring depth in the second half as Williams, a reserve, recorded nine points, starter Dominic DeMuri registered eight and reserve Cole Sweig tallied five.
Millan completed his double-double with 15 rebounds, including 10 off the offensive boards.
Florence recorded 18 assists to just 8 turnovers and added an eye-catching 25 steals.
Afterward, Bomberg said he believes his team is headed in the right direction.
“We still have a lot of stuff to work on,” he added. “We’re still a work in progress and we’re going to take it practice by practice.”
