NORWAY — Niagara held host Norway to just five points in the first half en route to a 48-18 non-conference girls varsity basketball victory Friday.

Both teams scuffled in the first quarter when the Lady Badgers grabbed a 5-3 lead. But Niagara busted loose in the second quarter, outscoring the Knights 20-2 to basically put the game away.

“Early foul trouble and cold shooting doomed us from the start,” Norway coach Joe Tinti said. “And Niagara started hitting their outside shots in the second and third quarters and put the game out of reach. Niagara is an athletic team and has multiple weapons.”

Josie Rock topped the Lady Badgers (11-7) with 15 points. Andi Carlson scored 10 points for the Knights (6-7).

Wykons notch 4th win 42-32

IRON RIVER — The West Iron County Wykons picked up their fourth win of the season as they outscored visiting Gwinn by 10 in the second half in a West Pac Conference girls basketball game on Friday at Charles Greenlund Gymnasium.

“After a rough night before against Calumet (a 66-21 loss), it was nice to get a win on homecoming,” Wykon coach Eric Shamion said. “Our girls played good defense in the second half and we had seven kids in the scoring column. That’s important for us to be successful.”

Kali Harty, Danica Shamion and Brynlee Nodurft led West Iron (4-9) with eight points each.

Miners shut down IM 55-31

NEGAUNEE — The Negaunee Miners held visiting Iron Mountain to just two points in the first quarter on their way to a 55-31 Mid Peninsula Conference victory Friday night at Lakeview Memorial Gym.

“We came out slow in the first quarter and our shots just would not drop,” IM coach Karen Ellis said. “Negaunee shot very well the whole game.”

Ellison Powell led the Mountaineers (2-9) with 10 points and Annslee Runsat scored nine.

Meanwhile, the Lady Trojans (1-10) couldn’t get untracked offensively.
