Gavin Moore (6-3, 3-6, 6-4 at No. 3 singles) and Brett Berglund (6-4, 7-5 at No. 4 singles) added wins for the Flivvers.

NEGAUNEE — Iron Mountain’s boys varsity tennis team traveled to Negaunee for two matches Wednesday and left with a tie and a loss.

The Mountaineers swept the four singles matches against Westwood, while No. 1 singles player David Juul produced a three-set win for Iron Mountain’s lone victory against host Negaunee.

Juul had a big day for the Mountaineers, defeating Westwood’s Andrew Niemi 7-6 (5), 6-0 and Negaunee’s Luke Syrjala 1-6, 7-5, 10-3.

“David Juul had an excellent day against two of the better players in the U.P.,” Iron Mountain coach Marcus Celello said. “I’m proud of the way he battled, especially against Negaunee. He fought through adversity early on, but once he got comfortable, he settled in and showed he belongs in that top-tier of U.P. players.”

Meanwhile against the Patriots, the Mountaineers got victories from No. 2 singles Brenden LaPoint (6-2, 6-1), No. 3 singles Kaden Sheldon (2-6, 6-3, 6-3) and No. 4 singles Reece Kangas (6-3, 6-2).

“We were down a couple of guys today, but I’m proud of everybody for stepping up,” Celello said. “Westwood is a team we will be seeing in the postseason, so a 4-4 tie shows we’ll be in the running. Negaunee is one of the top teams in the U.P., and I was encouraged by the way we fought against a high-quality team.”
