Prep volleyball: Flivvers sweep GNC rival Marquette; Norway, North Dickinson get wins

Niagara’s Alivia Kleikamp (25) blasts a shot Thursday as Suring defender Gracie Christensen (5) tries to block.
The Kingsford Flivvers and the Marquette Sentinels have been two of the finest volleyball teams in the Great Northern Conference for the last several seasons.
But while the two squads have traded blows along the way, the Flivvers have taken the upper hand recently with seven consecutive victories, including Thursday night’s 25-19, 25-22, 25-16 victory at Marquette High School.
Senior middle Cassie Olson and junior outside hitter Mylee Kreider notched seven kills each, while Mya Brunswick and Staysha Jarski posted five apiece as the Flivvers increased their win streak against U.P. opponents to begin the 2025 season to 10.
“Beating Marquette on their home court feels good regardless of our performance,” said KHS coach Jaclynn Kreider, who expressed disappointment with some of her team’s offensive execution. “They have been a strong opponent of ours in the conference for so many years and playing in front of their student section is never an easy task for us.”
Karly Trevillian and Mckynzee Kreider directed Kingsford’s two-setter offense with 13 and 11 assists, respectively. Trevillian and Onika Smeester ripped three aces each, while Olson recorded a team-high three assisted blocks.
Over the past two seasons, it’s been evident that when Olson plays well, the Flivvers are a more difficult team to deal with, and the senior continued her recent impressive play against the Sentinels (3-6).
“Cassie Olson had another incredible night in the middle for us hitting .700,” Coach Kreider said. “She continues to bring a ton of energy when she is on the floor and encouragement to her teammates when she is not.”
Defensively, Brunswick paced KHS with 10 digs to go with nine from Mckynzee Kreider, eight from Mylee Kreider, seven from Trevillian, six from Smeester and Alivia Nash, three from Lakyn Wallis and two from Jarski.
Coach Kreider said her team dealt with Marquette’s serving well.
“Our serve receive continues to be reliable these past few matches so that has been another huge payoff,” she said.
The Flivvers return home to host Iron Mountain (3-9-1) on Tuesday, Sept. 23.
