During UP muzzleloader season, hunters must use muzzleloaders — DNR

CWD ‘questions and answers’ clarified

IRON MOUNTAIN — The Michigan Department of Natural Resources has provided updated information related to questions and answers on chronic wasting disease published in a Hunting Season 2019 supplement in the Oct. 21 edition of The Daily News.

One questioner asked: Is there a change to muzzleloader season?

“In the CWD management zone in the Lower Peninsula you can now use any legal firearm during muzzleloader season,” said John Pepin, DNR deputy public information officer. “This provision is not in effect in the Upper Peninsula,” he emphasized. “This was an error that was corrected last year.”

Another question asked: Are other surveillance measures being taken in the U.P.?

The published answer discussed disease control permits, but these are no longer available. “The provision to offer disease control permits within certain portions of the core CWD surveillance area is not in effect for 2019,” Pepin said. “This information has recently been updated on our CWD website.”

The latest information should be available at www.Michigan.gov/CWD, he added.
