Carney-Nadeau stifles Forest Park, 57-39

Boys Basketball

CARNEY — In a preview of an upcoming Division 4 boys basketball district opener, the Carney-Nadeau Wolves got the better of the Forest Park Trojans in a 57-39 victory Friday night in Carney.

The Wolves led 11-8 at the end of the first quarter and 29-17 at halftime of the Skyline Central Conference contest.

“We played really well on the defensive end and with the energy we needed,” C-N coach Paul Polfus said. “The guys knew we’re going to have to play this team in districts, so we have to be locked in. I was pretty happy with the energy level.”

Beau Koffman led the Wolves (13-7, 12-4 SC) with 20 points and six 3-pointers. Brett LaFord followed with 14 points, 10 rebounds and four assists. Max Baumler added 11 points and four steals, while Mike Flanagan chipped in six points and six steals.

“I thought we moved the ball pretty well,” Polfus said. “Defensively, we did a real nice job taking away gaps and getting help on (Keal) Emmers, especially in the middle part of the game and second quarter. At times, we moved the ball real crisp. Koffman had four 3’s in the third quarter. It was nice to see someone pick it up and do that.”

Gavin Johnson led the Trojans with 18 points, while Emmers added 11. Tommy Showers chipped in eight rebounds.

The Trojans (8-11, 7-8 SC), who were without Tommy Peltoma, held a 22-18 rebounding advantage and shot 15 for 47 from the field. The Wolves were 21 for 50, including 12 for 28 from 3-point range.

“Their pressure got to us early and really affected us the whole game,” said Forest Park head coach Kurt Lehmann. “We need to work on that, but the good news is we get to play them again soon. Gavin Johnson played a real good game for us tonight.”

The teams will play their district opener March 9 in Carney.
