Flivvers denied in regional semifinal

Theresa Proudfit/The Daily News KINGSFORD’S DAVID JUUL battles for possession against Marquette during Thursday’s MHSAA regional hockey game.

IRON MOUNTAIN — Behind two power play goals from senior Gaetano Cammarata and two goals From junior Evan Kroll, Marquette rolled past Kingsford 7-1 Thursday night in a MHSAA Regional No. 9 semifinal at Mountain View Ice Arena.

Owen Riipi added a goal and three assists for Marquette, who improved to 23-4 on the season.

Cooper Anderson recorded two assists for the Redmen, as did Lucas Guertin. In all three periods one thing was consistant, the Redmen forecheck kept the puck away from Kingsford for the majority of the hockey game, which was a significant factor.

“We moved the puck really well tonight, this is such a tough building to play in and it was close early on,” said Marquette head coach Doug Garrow. “I kept telling our guys, that we needed to get our first goal, and then once we got our second goal, things progressed and got rolling for us.”

Marquette outshot the Flivvers 41-23 on the evening, which kept Kingsford senior goalie Evan Hedtke on his toes throughout the game.

“I thought our guys really worked hard tonight,” said Kingsford head coach Greg Wadge. “As the game wore on, our defense did a good job of tightening up in the neutral zone, stopping Marquette from making stretch passes that they are so good at.”

Garrow noted something that many other Great Lakes Hockey Conference coaches noted throughout the years, that it is difficult for opposing teams to play at Mountain View. “Things happen quicker in this place, and opposing players have to get used to making decisions quicker. The rink is shorter and not as wide as most regulation rinks are,” said Garrow. “It helped we were on the power play so much tonight, it gave our guys time to make plays and move the puck.” The Redmen had many power play opportunities, as the Flivvers were sent to the penalty box nine times compared to only three times for the

Redmen. “We had way too many penalties tonight,” Wadge said. “Especially against a team that moves the puck as well as Marquette does.” Marquette capitalized on their power play opportunities, scoring goals during four of nine Flivver penalties. Kingsford did score a power play goal of its own, a tally from Hunter Fortner, the Flivvers’ lone goal in the game. “I thought Brendan (Hakkola) made a couple key saves in the second

period, really big saves that kept us in the game,” Garrow said. “It was a good team for everyone, everyone got ice time and everyone contributed in one way or another.”

The Redmen will face Escanaba in the Regional No. 9 final, Wednesday, Mar. 4 at the Wells Sports Complex, with time of the game to be announced.

Kingsford ends its season 12-13.

“Marquette is a very solid hockey team, we wish them the best the rest of the season,” Wadge said.
