MTU prevails in overtime

HOUGHTON – Alex Smith scored with 29.3 seconds left in overtime to lift Michigan Tech to a 4-3 victory over Lake Superior State Saturday at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena. Brian Halonen was named Winter Carnival MVP after tallying two goals and adding an assist in the game while also adding an assist Friday. The Huskies fell 7-3 Friday.

Tech held on to a 3-2 lead late in the third before the Lakers pulled their goaltender and scored with 45 seconds left in regulation with the extra attacker. Pete Veillette scored from Ashton Calder and Lukas Kaelble to even it up.

Robbie Beydoun provided a team season-high 39 saves in his fourth start and second win.

The Huskies (16-14-3, 11-11-2-0 WCHA) play the final road series of the regular season next weekend at Ferris State.

In Mankato, Minn., a strong defensive bout between No. 15 Northern Michigan and No. 3 Minnesota State saw the Mavericks take the 1-0 final as the Wildcats were handed their first true road sweep of the season after falling 7-3 Friday night.

Nolan Kent made 20 saves on 21 shots in Saturday’s loss.

The Wildcats (16-10-4, 14-7-1-1 WCHA) return home for a crucial series against Bemidji State. Puck drop on Friday night is set for 7:07 p.m. EST. at the Berry Events Center.
