CARNEY — In a physical Skyline Central Conference girls basketball contest, Carney-Nadeau finally wore down Forest Park in the fourth quarter and came away with a 34-28 victory Monday night.

The Wolves, who trailed 17-14 at halftime and 24-23 after the third quarter, outscored the Trojans 11-4 in the fourth to pull out the win.

“It was a real physical game,” C-N coach Ken Linder said. “We were trying to push the ball the whole game and I think we just finally wore them down by pushing it. And we played good defense.”

Sandra Boulton led the Wolves (10-3, 9-3 SC) with 14 points. Tessa Wagner nearly had a triple-double, finishing with nine points, nine blocked shots and 10 rebounds.

C-N committed 10 turnovers and shot just 31% from the field.

“It was just a hard-fought, physical ball game,” Linder said. “We didn’t play all that well offensively, but we managed to get the win.”

Mercedes Simmons led the Trojans (4-9, 3-7 SC) with game-highs 16 points, and 13 rebounds in the losing effort.

“Another good defensive game for us, but we had a rough night shooting. Carney played good defense, especially in the second half,” said Lady Trojans head coach Kim Bjork.

“We had a tough time setting up our offense in the second half. Our girls are battling some good teams we just aren’t getting the offense we need to come away with a victory,” Bjork said.

“We shot 17% tonight, which makes it hard to win games shooting that low of a percentage. Plus, Carney has a well rounded team,” added Bjork.

C-N, which won the JV game 40-23, visits Rapid River Thursday. FP travels to non-conference foe Kingsford on the same night.
