KINGSFORD — Despite a game-high 16 points from Kingsford senior Christina Glodowski, Houghton powered past the host Flivvers 64-33 in non-conference girls basketball Friday night.

Sophomore Stella Wickstrom led the way for the Lady Gremlins, as she recorded a double-double of 14 points and 12 rebounds. Paige Sleeman also netted 14 points, while teammates Maryellen Trewhella, 12 points, and Gwen Markham, 11, gave the visitors four in double figures.

“I like that we had balanced scoring,” said Houghton coach Julie Filpus. “The girls looking out for each other, and looking down the floor for our fast-break points. When we’re playing like the way we did tonight, we’ll do some good things.”

Houghton’s strong defense also kept the Flivvers in check.

“One of the things that we really try to hang out hats on, is playing really good man to man defense,” Filpus said.

With Houghton leading by 15 at halftime, the first 2:02 of the third stanza put the game out of reach as Houghton went on an 8-2 scoring run.

“We dressed six varsity players tonight,” said Kingsford first-year coach Jon Lorenzoni. “We started the season with 13 girls, but due to injuries and some girls in quarantine due to contact tracing, we had to use a couple of JV players to have reserves. In the first quarter, we did some good things and had some intensity. But we can’t continue to score in the high 20s and low 30s if we want to win some games.”

Senior Liz Penegor chipped in 14 points for Kingsford, in what was the last regular season home game.

“Our girls play hard and the effort never lacks,” Lorenzoni said. “Despite our amount of turnovers, and our lack of scoring some nights, our record may not show it, but these girls work hard.”

The Flivvers (1-10) hit the road for the remainder of the regular season, beginning with a trip to West Iron County on Monday night for a non-conference game. On Tuesday, Kingsford travels to Norway for another non-conference tilt, with tip-off against the Lady Knights at 5:30 p.m.
