Flivvers stay busy on the road

KINGSFORD — The Kingsford swimming team worked its way through a busy portion of its schedule last week.

The Flivvers traveled to Houghton and Gladstone on consecutive days and performed well. The Kingsford girls defeated the Gremlins 98-70 and the Braves 101-43, while the Flivver boys defeated Gladstone 82-41 after losing to Houghton 123-48.

On the Flivver boys victory, coach Jim Lindstrom said, “Gladstone’s boys’ team is small like ours with the difference being ours is just more of a veteran team. With three boys down, we had to rely on some first-year swimmers, Bryce Groeneveld, Evan Tregillis, Jams Cain, Eric Mackey and Adam Baker, to step it up a notch this week swimming more and more events to help the team.”

Individual Kingsford winners in the Gladstone meet, included Pierre Hurtubise in the 50 freestyle, Joey Lundholm 200 individual medley and the 100 fly and Tommy Lundholm in the 100 back. Relay winners included Hurtubise, Mackey, Groeneveld and Tregillis (200 medley relay), Andrew Nelson, Cain, Tregillis and Hurtubise (200 free relay) and Tommy Lundholm, Cain, Groeneveld and Joey Lundhlom (400 free relay).

Against Houghton, Lindstrom said his team was “severely outnumbered.”

“We were still down one of our better swimmers, that makes a huge difference,” Lundstrom said. “Houghton has always been able to recruit a lot of boys and Coach Eric Johnson always has the well prepared they are hard to beat.”

Joey Lundholm won the 200 IM and the 100 freestyle, while Zane Cahee finished second in the 100 fly and 100 backstroke.

“Joey Lundholm continues to be a bright spot for the boys team, he is putting up one of the best freshman campaigns I have seen in a very long time,” Lindstrom said.

“Zane Cahee is also having an incredible season. … Andrew Nelson is back on the roster after a six-week absence and he has been a real shot in the arm swimming anything and everything.”

On the girls side against Houghton, the Flivvers were shorthanded with injury and illness, but they pulled off the win with some of the newer swimmers contributing.

“First-year swimmers Alyssa Englund, Petra Grubb and Olivia Rake have all been placing higher and higher every meet with all three making finals times,” Lindstrom said.

Individual winners included Sydney Scott in the 50 free and the 100 butterfly, Samantha Scott in the 200 IM and 100 backstroke, Sierra Scott in the 100 free and Maggie Menghini in the 200 freestyle.

Sydney, Samantha and Sierra Scott and Adelaide McRoberts won the 200 medley and 200 free relays.

Against Gladstone, the Kingsford girls won every event, led by the Scott sisters taking two events each. Sierra won the 200 free and 100 back, Samantha won the 50 free and 100 breaststroke and Sydney captured the 200 IM and 100 fly.

Grubb, a freshman, won the 100 free for her first high school win and swimming a U.P. qualifying time as well.

“Petra has really been swimming well as of late,” Lindstrom said.

Grubb also teamed up with the Scott sisters to win the 200 medley and 200 free relays, while Englund, Lexi Stanley, Haliauna Kusmitch and Menghini won the 400 free relay.

“Haliauna is another one who has been dropping huge chunks of time as of late,” Lindstrom reported.
