Hoops wrap: Knights overtake SC in 4th
(Terry Raiche photo) Kingsford varsity hoopster Zoie Geronimi (22) looks to get a shot off against Gladstone defender Veronica Hall (22) during Tuesday night’s Great Northern Conference contest on the Flivvers’ home floor. Geronimi chipped in seven points for Kingsford. But the visiting Braves would return home with a 52-20 overtime win, thanks to a 3-pointer by Claire van Ginhoven.
NORWAY — Donna VanHolla recorded five points, while Taylor Adams and Averie Popp each sank a 3-pointer in the fourth quarter to help Norway outscore Superior Central by five to post a 42-38 victory over the Cougars in a Skyline Central Conference girls varsity basketball contest Wednesday at Norway High School.
“Superior Central battled the entire game, but we were able to hold them off and battle through some injuries in the second half,” Norway coach Joe Tinti said. “Our intensity was there for all quarters.”
Superior Central (11-7) held a one-point lead entering the fourth quarter after outscoring Norway 25-20 through the second and third quarters.
Andi Carlson topped the Knights with 12 points. Jada Freudinger added nine points, while VanHolla and Adams chipped in with seven points each.
With the victory, Norway (9-9) has won three of its last four games, heading into its regular-season finale at Rapid River.
“If we can finish in the post more frequently, we can be playing some of our best basketball at the right time,” Tinti said.
Braves edge Flivvers 52-50
KINGSFORD — Gladstone senior and Finlandia University recruit Claire van Ginhoven hit a 3-pointer late in overtime to send the Braves to a 52-50 victory over Kingsford in a Great Northern Conference girls varsity basketball tussle on Tuesday evening at Kingsford High School.
The team battled nip-and-tuck through the game with the score knotted at 47-all heading into the overtime session.
“I thought we played very well,” Kingsford coach Jon Lorenzoni said. “Our seniors who took the floor all contributed well. Nice to see that on Senior Night. What a great group of young adults.”
Lorenzoni said his team had an open 3-point look to win the game at the buzzer, but the shot “was halfway in” before it fell out.
Senior Abby Terrian led the Flivvers (7-12) with 16 points. Fellow seniors Paige Olsen and Allie LaVarnway registered eight points each, while classmate Zoie Geronimi added seven.
Kingsford’s other senior, point guard Talia Wallis, was unable to play because of injury.
Mountaineers win, earn split
IRON MOUNTAIN — Chloe Maycroft scored 17 points and Annslee Runsat contributed 15 to lead Iron Mountain to a 51-37 Mid Pen/West Pac Conference girls varsity basketball victory over Gwinn on Wednesday evening at Mountaineer Gym.
The Mountaineers, who lost in overtime to the Modeltowners two weeks ago, used a 13-6 third quarter to break free from Gwinn in the rematch. Callie Bianco scored five points and Maycroft added four as Iron Mountain (7-12) took a 35-25 lead heading into the fourth.
Runsat then sealed the deal with nine points, including 5 of 6 from the foul line.
Norway stifles Superior Central
NORWAY — The UPSSA Division 4 fifth-ranked Norway Knights held visiting Superior Central scoreless in the first quarter and never looked back in their 56-18 Skyline Central Conference boys varsity basketball win Wednesday night in the first game of a boys-girls doubleheader at Norway High School.
Nolan Amundson rang up 12 of his game-high 24 points in the opening eight minutes to lift the Knights (12-5) to a 19-0 lead heading into the second.
Things didn’t get better for the Cougars (4-10) as they trailed 36-6 at halftime and 52-10 after three quarters.
“I thought we played hard and got after it defensively tonight,” Norway coach Jeff Gallino said. “We had a lot of contributions. It was a good team win.”
