Mergansers return

Betsy Bloom/Daily News photo

A group of hooded mergansers swim Six Mile Creek in northern Dickinson County. Mergansers, both the diminutive hooded and the larger common, are among the earliest migratory birds to return to the Upper Peninsula, usually long before the ice has disappeared. Other notable birds back in the region in the past week include red-wing blackbirds and a growing number of Canada geese.
