Be careful on first ice — DNR

National Walleye Tour coming to Sturgeon Bay, Wis., in May

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources advises anglers not to venture out on unfamiliar ice, or without a plan in case you break through.

First ice is great for pike and panfish, the DNR said. However, ice thickness is variable on most of the inland lakes in the Upper Peninsula and many still have unfishable ice.

Open water anglers were still getting some steelhead on the Manistique River while the Two Hearted River had fair to good steelhead fishing, the DNR said.

Northern pike are ideal midday targets through the ice, even for those who want to set up tip-ups and enjoy a leisurely day.

The Michigan Snowsports Industries Association reminds ski enthusiasts that the association’s website, goskimichigan.org, now has a COVID-19 information page with links to each Michigan ski area’s COVID-19 policies.

“This makes it easy for skiers and riders to check out the particulars at any ski area that they plan to head to and come prepared,” said Mickey MacWilliams, president and executive director of MSIA.

No matter the location, face coverings will be required indoors and out, when social distancing cannot be achieved.

“The important thing to remember is that we are doing this for the wellbeing of our guests and our staff. We want everyone to be able to head out and enjoy the slopes safely,” said Steve Kershner, MSIA chairman and director of snow sports at Shanty Creek Resort.

An outdoor show will fill the Rec Center in Marinette, Wis., from Feb. 19-21, featuring fishing, boating, RVing and outdoor recreation exhibitors and activities.

A full lineup of fishing and outdoor seminars will include presentations by Mike Mladenik, Scott Allen, Starla Batzko, Kevin Pischke, Jim Pryal, Joe Schlueter and others, according to event sponsor FishingBoatingOutdoor of Lakewood, Wis.
