Just who does Mr. McBroom represent in UP?

I can hardly believe that our state senator, Ed McBroom, went to Lansing to testify AGAINST increasing protected wilderness in the U.P. Doesn’t he understand how important tourism is to us? Doesn’t he understand WHY the tourists come here? It is the pristine wilderness. Tourism benefits all of us. The hotels, the small stores, restaurants and bars and many more benefit from tourism. These are the people that you represent. Or am I wrong? Do you represent the loggers and developers who would cut down the trees, drive out the wildlife and build who knows what? So, Mr. McBroom, ...

A role model for getting along?

I was just reading a comprehensive series of articles about the mental health and behavior of children as we come out of the COVID pandemic situation and an attempt to return to what might be called normal. It seems the children who had to be sequestered during the pandemic have lost some ground in the area of getting along with others. That is not surprising, as if you are not with other children it is hard to learn to relate, not only to your peers but with society in general. Now as some of you know from reading my previous letters, I usually look for a solution and this time I was ...

Favors red flag, gun safety laws

On Sept. 25, local and out-of-town Republican Party members attended the Dickinson County Board meeting requesting that Dickinson County adopt the Second Amendment Sanctuary resolution. I’m curious — wondering how they feel about finding out from TV6 News the young man who made threats to our area schools had ammunition and guns, including an assault-style rifle, and talked about using them during spirit week? I am so grateful the local law enforcement was able to arrest him and no precious children were injured or killed. I personally favor red flag and gun safety laws. How about you?

Jack and Jim, birds of a feather

Jack Bergman is showing his true colors again. He supported Jim Jordan, an ex-wrestling coach from Ohio who reportedly failed to speak up when his wrestlers were being sexually assaulted by team doctor Richard Strauss. Bergman and Jordan voted against certification of Pennsylvania and Arizona votes on Jan. 6. In December 2020, Bergman sided with Texas attorney general’s attempt to deny the results of the November Michigan presidential vote. Bergman voted for Jordan to be Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives three times last week. Now Bergman wants to be speaker in place of ...

Thanks for ‘Ford’s Mixed Legacy’

I want to thank the writer of “Ford’s Mixed Legacy” for bringing to light some unsavory events of Kingsford’s past. The writer of “Ford’s Mixed Legacy” was right to call out the past actions of those who sought to limit the economic opportunities for African Americans in our community. However, Kingsford is not the same community it was in 1920. Now there are laws that protect all Americans from discrimination. Present-day Kingsford High School, while does not have as diverse a student body as large urban areas, is no longer an all-white high school. Due to ...

Some thoughts on waste plastic

I recently read a long article in another newspaper, a member of a chain of papers. They often have lengthy pieces, well researched, which a company that size can afford to do. This one was from the CEO of S.C. Johnson, a well-known Wisconsin company. It seems this man enjoys diving in various waters and became concerned about the amount of waste plastic in the waters all across the world. He further became interested in the microfibers of plastic left when plastic breaks down. This is a worldwide problem that space here does not permit detailing. Let us just say it is an important ...
