Prep Wrestling: Flivvers fifth, IM sixth at Elks Invite

ESCANABA — Make it a three-peat for the Escanaba wrestlers.

Esky captured top honors in the Elks Invitational for the third straight time on Saturday by scoring 224 points in the 47th annual tournament.

Downstate Coopersville was runner-up at 160, followed by Gladstone 147 1/2 and Ishpeming 130 1/2. Kingsford (94) was fifth and Iron Mountain (91 1/2) sixth.

Kingsford’s Eddie Cardew earned first place at 285 pounds, knocking off Gladstone’s Brett Boudreau in the finals.

“Eddie has been on a role since coming back from an injury,” Flivvers head coach Darren Groleau said. “We had a pretty good day and we have some momentum going right now. We have to keep working hard and keep this going until states.”

Josh Peterson took second at 140 pounds, losing to Hunter Larson, who’s ranked in the top 5 in Division 2.

“Josh, since dropping down to 140, has been very competitive going 8-1,” Groleau noted. “He’s been competing in each and every match.”

Ben Stanish took third at 215, pinning Preston Collette from Ishpeming.

“Big Ben was dealing with the flu all day but he wrestled really well,” Groleau said. “We give him props battling all day with that.”

Toby Wilcox came away with a fifth at 145 in a loaded weight class, pinning Tylor Lindholm of Westwood in his final match.

“He lost a close match to Sam Ross from Benzie Central in the quarters,” Groleau said. “I’m proud of the way he battled back to pin his way out.”

For Iron Mountain Shawn McGuire went 3-0 on his way to first at 112 pounds, taking down Zachary Duncan of Grayling in the finals, 3-1.

Evan Haferkorn (119) went 3-1 and took second, falling to Hunter Solid of Gladstone in the finals.

Parker Stroud (130) was 1-0 and took fourth, having to medical forfeit his last two matches. Isaac Manier (135) went 2-1 for third, Bradon Farragh was 3-2 for sixth, and Preston Roberts (145) went 2-2.
