KHS boys swimmers win against Houghton
IRON MOUNTAIN — Kingsford hosted Houghton for senior night at the Northern Lights YMCA Dickinson Center pool Thursday afternoon.
Kingsford’s boys prevailed 92-66, while the Gremlins girls won 86-81.
Senior captain Luke Sturm, one of 10 seniors on Kingsford’s team, lead the way with wins in both the 200 and 100 freestyle. Kolbe Raiche took the 100 backstroke, while Sam Bilgreen won the 50 freestyle and John Lundholm took the 100 butterfly.
Raiche, Sturm and Lundholm teamed with Caleb Voss to win the 200 medley relay. Bilgreen teamed up with freshman Noah Richmond, Kaden Matuszewski and Zane Cahee to win the 200 freestyle relay.
“Zane has really come on strong these past few weeks for a kid who has had absolutely no swimming experience he has been a pleasant surprise,” said head coach Jim Lindstrom.
Sydney Scott had two wins in the 100 butterfly and 100 breastroke for the Flivvers girls. Samantha Scott took the 100 backstroke and 200 individual medley.
Kendall Johnson won the 50 freestyle and Anna Lundholm won the 100 freestyle. The Scott sisters, Johnson and Lundholm won both the 200 medley relay 400 freestyle relay.
“Our girls had a really good meet,” Lindstrom said. “We have some really good swimmers on the girl’s team but our depth is not there yet. We have some really good freshman and sophomores who are progressing very well, but it takes time for them to develop.”
Kingsford is off until Friday when the Flivvers travel to Marquette for a JV meet on Friday. Swimming and Diving UP Finals will be held Feb. 14 and 15 in Marquette.
