Kriegl carries Flivvers by Simmons, Trojans

KINGSFORD — Brooke Kriegl scored 14 of her game-high 21 points in the fourth quarter as Kingsford pulled away from Forest Park in a 46-34 non-conference girls basketball victory Thursday evening.

Kriegl posted a double-double in the game, also collecting a team-best 12 rebounds. She added seven steals and five assists as well. And the Flivvers needed it all, as Forest Park rallied to tie the game early in the fourth quarter.

“We pulled it off but it certainly wasn’t easy or pretty at times,” Flivvers head coach Lisa Harry said. “Brooke pretty much took over in the fourth quarter. She had an active night of all around play.”

Kriegl’s big fourth helped the Flivvers overcome an 18-point, 19-rebound showing by Forest Park’s Mercedes Simmons. Simmons scored nine in the fourth. She also had five blocks and three steals.

“It was another tough one for us,” Forest Park head coach Kim Bjork said. “We were in the game until the final four minutes when we had to put them at the line. Our defense played great. It was a physical game. I’m proud of the effort our girls give. They play with a lot of heart.”

Kriegl was the recipient of the Forest Park fouling late in the game, and she answered with a 9-of-11 showing at the line in the final frame. Kingsford was 17-of-26 from the stripe for the ballgame.

Maggie Strehlow added 11 points for Kingsford. The Flivvers’ full-court press generated 21 steals, and as a team they collected 34 rebounds.

“Overall, I was happy with our team play,” Harry noted. “They all played really hard. Our shots didn’t fall at times or Simmons swatted them away, but it wasn’t from a lack of effort. Our rebounding and steals made the difference tonight.”

Jenna Olkkonen scored 11 points in Kingsford’s 62-19 win in the junior varsity contest. Both teams play again Tuesday, both at home. Forest Park (4-10) hosts Munising, while Kingsford (6-8) welcomes Escanaba.
