KINGSFORD — Round two of the Twin City rivalry for Iron Mountain and Kingsford’s volleyball teams — scorewise– went the same as round one did. The Flivvers defeated Iron Mountain 3-0 in Tuesday’s non-conference game in the Kingsford Middle School Gymnasium.
However, the sets were far more competitive than the earlier meeting of these teams at Iron Mountain on Sept. 22. The set scores Tuesday night were 25-22, 25-18, 25-22.
Both teams were without a starter in the matchup, with Iron Mountain’s Bella Rosenthal and Kingsford’s Katherine Erickson both missing the match due to being in quarantine for COVID-19 exposure.
“We struggled in serve receive tonight, Iron Mountain served great and had us playing on our heels,” said Kingsford head coach Jaclynn Kreider. “We adjusted to not having Katherine tonight, some girls played positions new to them, our adjustments worked out well enough for tonight.”
“We played much better than our last match versus them (Kingsford) two weeks ago,” said veteran Iron Mountain head coach Jeanne Newberry. “We served with confidence and our communication was great.”
Georjee Swartout received praise from both coaches for her play in the match. “Georjee makes the most of her playing time,”Newberry said. “She’s our utility player.”
Newberry was also happy with her team’s play without having Rosenthal in the lineup.
“We had to adjust as well, and the girls responded fine,” she said.
Both coaches had a great deal of praise for Tallia Wallis of the Flivvers. “Some of the balls she gets to and makes a successful play on are incredible,” Newberry noted.
The Mountaineers return to action on Thursday when they host Mid-Peninsula Conference foe Gladstone. Kingsford travels to Menominee on Monday for Great Northern Conference action.
Kingsford won the freshman contest 3-0; there was no JV match on the evening, due to Iron Mountain not having enough players to field a team.
