Knights, Flivvers split softball doubleheader
NORWAY — A non-conference softball doubleheader at Marion Park Friday afternoon was split, as the host Lady Knights took game No. 1, 13-9, while Kingsford won game two, 17-3.
Sophomore Hannah Burklund went 3 for 5, scoring two runs with teammates Averie Popp going 2 for 4, Andi Carlson, 2 for 3 with a walk and Gabby Leiker 2 for 4 for the Knights offensively.
“In game one we played really well, scoring nine first-inning runs was a key,” said Norway head coach Bob Bal. “We knew Kingsford wasn’t going to go away, they are a good team with a real solid lineup. Our defense was solid behind Kalli’s (Stanchina) pitching, with only one error.”
Stanchina went the distance for the Knights (4-1), walking two and fanning four.
Holly Richer and Elaina Bortolini toed the mound for the Flivvers in game one.
Offensively, Kingsford’s Lizzy Cross went 2 for 4 with two runs scored, and Allie LaVarnway went 3 for 4.
In game No. 2, Kingsford exploded for five runs in the 2nd inning and six runs in the 3rd inning, with Macy Holmes going 4 for 4 from the plate.
“In game two I was proud the way Hannah (Burklund) persevered despite the loss, with it only being her second start,” Bal said. “We’ll take it and get ready for Bark River on Monday.”
Bark River-Harris visits Marion Park on Monday to take on Norway in Skyline Central Conference action. Kingsford hosts Escanaba on Tuesday in Great Northern Conference action.
