No. 4 Esky takes down Wykons

STAMBAUGH — Jared Hanson sank a trio of 3-point shots at crunch time here Tuesday night, helping the fourth-ranked Escanaba boys rally past the West Iron County Wykons 56-49 in a non-conference basketball game.

West Iron led 44-40 with three minutes left before Hanson drained a pair of triples to send the Eskymos ahead 46-44.

“Jared scored nine points in the fourth quarter,” said Esky coach Tracy Hudson. “I thought he played probably his best game. We got into a little foul trouble, but our guys found a way to win. I’m proud of our kids. It seems like we have a different guy step up every night. We find those buttons to push.”

Esky led 35-21 at halftime. The Wykons, however, rallied to tie the score at 40 after the third quarter.

“We made a heck of a comeback in the second half, we had lots of energy,” said Wykons head coach Dan Schive. “But the three 3-pointers from Hanson in the fourth quarter was the beginning of the end.”

The Wykons were led in scoring by Justin Nelson with 13 points and Nathan Thomson with 12 points. Schive noted that his bench players played great in the second quarter.

“We have to learn how to play with maximum effort for four quarters, but it’s my job to get our players to do that,” said Schive.

“We got off to a great start, then the wheels kind of fell off in the third quarter,” said Hudson. “West Iron has a very solid team. They probably played one of their best games. They did a good job mixing their defenses and took us out of our rhythm. They’re a dangerous team that can handle the ball. We learned a lot tonight. We pulled together when we had to.”

Carter Hudson led the Eskymos (12-6) with 18 points. Bryant Maki and Hanson scored 11 each and Brandon Frazer collected 11 assists.

The Wykons (8-7) travel to West PAC conference foe Iron Mountain Monday.
